🟨 Why Burger King Was Liking Your Old Tweets
How to trick the internet into advertising your brand...
Hey there!
Every other Wednesday, I share a Marketing Campaign example to help you get fresh and actionable ideas to sell more and grow your business.
Order. Eat. Repeat
I ordered jollof rice and spicy chicken from Chicken Republic on Chowdeck yesterday at 1:15 PM and my food was delivered to me at 1:40 PM. That’s how fast they are. While you’re thinking of what to order, don’t forget to use the discount code CD-TORINMOZN to get N500 off when you order your meal.
In 2019, Burger King set out to relaunch its Funnel Fries, which was discontinued in 2010. So, what did the hamburger fast food chain do, it started liking tweets posted by people including celebrities and influencers back in 2010. Of course, they received notifications that Burger King had liked some of their tweets.
Many people were puzzled and tweeted screenshots of their liked tweets, questioning Burger King’s reason for liking tweets from over eight years ago.
"Some things from 2010 are worth revisiting—like your old tweets and funnel cake fries. Get them now for a limited time," Burger King explained in a tweet.
Casey Neistat, one of the influencers who also shared the screenshot, created a video praising the brand for its smart marketing while highlighting some of its weak points. He called out Burger King for "tricking" social media influencers into promoting its Funnel Cake Fries. Neistat urged the brand to call him and contribute to the charities he supports.
ICYMI: Are you an Anti-Apper?
The video went viral and the CMO of Burger King reached out to Neistat and committed USD 25,000 to the charities he supported. Neistat created a second video sharing this update and the video received over 2 million views on YouTube.
Thousands of people on Twitter were tweeting about it, which led to increased media coverage. Burger King pulled off an influencer marketing campaign without the influencers even realizing it. And it didn’t cost them anything maybe just a little.
🍉 Action Points
Leverage mystery and even confusion to create buzz - By liking old tweets, Burger King generated curiosity. People were puzzled and shared their confusion, leading to increased visibility for the brand.
Use nostalgia to your advantage - Burger King tapped into the power of nostalgia by bringing back the discontinued Funnel Fries from 2010. People have a soft spot for things they remember fondly. Consider reviving popular products or themes from your brand's past. It's a way to connect with your audience and spark interest.
Influencer marketing with a twist - Burger King managed to turn the tables on influencer marketing. Think about ways to collaborate with influencers that feel genuine and authentic, creating a more organic connection with your audience.
